How it works

From roll registration to buyer report in four steps

Fabric Inspection Software follows the order a floor already works in: register the roll, log defects by tap or voice, watch the points per 100 sq yd settle against the buyer limit, then finish the roll and share the report. No formula in anyone's head, and no network needed for tap logging. The inspector finds the defects; the app scores, records and reports them.

In short: Fabric Inspection Software works in four steps: register the roll (or scan its QR label) and pick the buyer, log each defect with 1 to 4 points by tap or by voice, watch points per 100 sq yd and PASS or FAIL update live against ASTM D5430 rules, then finish the roll to print a QR label and share the buyer report or a debit note draft for the mill. Tap logging works offline. It does not detect defects from camera images.

Four steps, in the order the floor works

1

Register the roll

PO, lot, shade, mill, length, width and GSM entered once; the QR label reopens it.

2

Tap or speak defects

Big 1–4 buttons, defect chips and photos, or voice where the device supports it.

3

Auto pass/fail

Points per 100 sq yd live, judged against the buyer you picked at intake.

4

Report + claim

Print-ready buyer report with roll map, and a debit note draft for failed rolls.

Step 01 · Register the roll

Roll registration: typed once, then a QR label does the rest

Each roll is registered once at goods-in: roll number, mill roll number, PO, lot, shade, supplier mill, fabric, GSM, length and width, typed on the tablet or created through the API from your ERP. The app gives the roll a unique QR code. Scanning the printed label later (with the tablet's camera app or a handheld scanner) or typing the roll number opens the same record at the frame, so nothing is retyped.

The last thing at intake is the buyer. Choosing the buyer pulls that buyer's point limit, hole rule, unit (square yards or square metres) and report options from the buyer standards library. From here on, everything the inspector sees is judged against that buyer.

  • Roll ID, PO, lot, shade, mill, length, width, GSM
  • Buyer picked once; limit and report options follow
  • Planned: a sampling helper that flags lots with fewer than 10 % of rolls inspected

Step 02 · Tap or speak defects

Four giant buttons, or just say it

The inspection screen is built for gloves and tube lights: a dark high-contrast layout with 1, 2, 3 and 4 point buttons the size of a palm, and defect chips for hole, slub, stain, barre, needle line, lycra out and whatever else is in your defect master. Tap the points, tap the type, confirm the yard from the frame counter, and the defect lands on the roll map.

When both hands are on the fabric, the inspector talks instead. "Slub, moonu point, eighty-six" is logged as Slub · 3 pts · 86 yd and read back on the confirmation bar. Number words can be Tamil, Hindi or English, in script or transliterated. Voice uses the tablet browser's speech recognition (Chrome on Android), so Tamil and Hindi availability and accuracy depend on the device and usually need a network connection; the buttons and a typed phrase box always work. A photo takes one more tap and attaches to that defect for the report and any claim once the tablet is online.

  • Points by defect length: up to 3 in = 1, 3–6 in = 2, 6–9 in = 3, over 9 in = 4
  • Holes scored by the buyer's rule (2 or 4 points)
  • Undo by button or by saying "undo"

Step 03 · Auto pass/fail

The gauge moves with every entry

Each logged defect updates total points, points per 100 sq yd and the distance to the buyer limit. The formula is points × 3600 ÷ (yards × width in inches), with the ASTM D5430 cap of 4 points per linear yard applied automatically, so two slubs in the same yard do not inflate the result. Running defects such as needle lines earn 4 points for every yard they continue, and the app warns when a running defect passes the buyer's reject length.

The roll map strip shows where the damage sits. A cutter looking at it later knows to skip 40 to 46 yards; a merchandiser knows that a roll at 9.3 points is comfortably first quality for a 40-point buyer and still fine for a 20-point one. Shade, GSM and shrinkage tests are recorded on the same roll but kept out of the points, as the standard requires.

  • Live points per 100 sq yd and per 100 sq m
  • PASS / FAIL or First / Second quality, per buyer
  • Lot average shown alongside the roll result

Step 04 · Report + claim

Finish roll, print the QR, share the report

"Finish roll" closes the record, stamps PASS or FAIL, opens the roll's QR label (roll ID and result) for printing through the tablet's print dialog, and updates the lot. Any printer Android can reach works, including label printers that offer an Android print service. The buyer report uses that buyer's report options: roll details, defect table, photos, the full roll map, points per 100 sq yd against the limit, shade, GSM and shrinkage, the inspector's name and signature lines. Print it or save it as PDF from the browser, or share a read-only link that expires when you choose.

If the roll failed, Fabric Inspection Software drafts a debit note to the mill from the same record, with the mill invoice reference, failed points, photos and map attached. The QC head adds the deduction value and sends it. Both documents come from one inspection; nothing is retyped.

  • Roll, lot and PO reports (print or save as PDF); CSV export and REST API
  • QR label that reopens the roll and its map at the cutting table
  • Claim register tracks draft, sent, accepted, disputed and settled notes

What happens off the frame

Offline queue

Defect taps, undo and "finish roll" are written to the tablet's browser first. The header shows how many entries are queued until Wi-Fi or mobile data returns, then they sync. Open each roll once while online; photos wait for the network and voice usually needs it.

Device requirements

Chrome on any Android 9+ tablet or phone; a ₹10–12k 10-inch tablet with a rugged case is the usual setup. It is a web app added to the home screen, not a Play Store app. Camera for evidence photos, microphone for voice, any printer Android can print to for labels.

Roles

Inspectors log rolls under their own login (on-screen PIN switching for shared tablets is planned). QC heads edit limits and send claims. Merchandisers watch lot status, mill failure rates and pending claims from the office.

Secondary tests on the same roll

The 4-point system covers visible defects only. Buyers also want shade, GSM, shrinkage, width and length. Fabric Inspection Software records shade group (visual, or spectrophotometer ΔE), GSM against the target and the buyer's tolerance, and warp and weft wash shrinkage against the buyer's maximum as separate tests on the roll, next to its width and length. They print on the report below the 4-point result and are never converted into points, so your numbers stay comparable with any inspection done by hand or by a buyer's own QA. Skew or bow, odour and length-shortage fields are planned; until then, note them in the roll remarks.

Ready to see it on your rolls? Book a factory demo in Tirupur, Surat or Ludhiana, or check a roll yourself on the 4-point calculator. For the wider set of fabric checks, read about fabric quality control software, or follow our step-by-step guide to inspecting knitted fabric.

Batch and lot traceability: roll → lot → PO → buyer report → debit note

Every roll in Fabric Inspection Software belongs to a lot and a purchase order and carries its supplier mill, so one inspection can be traced forward to the buyer report and back to the mill claim. The roll's QR label is the key: scanning it opens the same record at the frame, in the store or at the cutting table.

  1. RollRegistered once with its own QR code: roll and mill roll number, fabric, GSM, length, width, shade.
  2. LotRolls roll up into the lot: roll count, yards, passed and failed, lot average points per 100 sq yd.
  3. POLots and rolls link to the purchase order and the supplier mill that shipped them.
  4. Buyer reportA roll, lot or PO report under the buyer's standard, shared as an expiring read-only link or printed.
  5. Debit noteA failed roll's claim to the mill carries the roll, lot and PO, the points against the limit used, photos and the roll map.

What the QR label does

The label printed at "finish roll" holds the roll's unique code. A phone or tablet camera app, or a handheld scanner, opens the roll record from it, so a cutter, a store clerk or a buyer's QA visitor reaches the same defects, map and result without searching. The label does not carry the full report; it points to the live record, which needs a login.

What the audit trail records

Every defect logged (by tap or voice), every undo, every photo and every finished roll is written to the audit log with the user and time, and each debit note keeps the points and limit used when it was drafted. When a mill disputes a claim, the record shows who logged what, and when.

Status as of October 2026. Tell us if you find a page that says more than this table; we will correct it.

Does it detect defects automatically from camera images?

No. Fabric Inspection Software does not detect defects from camera images and has no AI defect detection. Inspectors find each defect on the frame and log it by tap or by voice; the tablet camera only attaches an evidence photo to a defect the inspector has already logged. Automated camera inspection is a different category of product: vision systems mounted on the inspection machine, such as Uster Fabriq Vision or Smartex, which cost lakhs per machine. Many mills that use vision systems still need buyer reports, buyer limits and mill claims, which is the part this software does.

Frequently asked questions

Do inspectors need to know the 4-point formula?

No. They log the defect and its size; Fabric Inspection Software assigns the points, caps them at 4 per linear yard, normalises to 100 sq yd and compares with the buyer limit. The QC head sees the maths on the report if a buyer asks.

What happens if the tablet loses network mid-roll?

Tap logging carries on. Each defect tap, undo and "finish roll" is saved in the tablet's browser and the header shows how many entries are queued; when Wi-Fi or mobile data returns, the queue syncs and the dashboard updates. The roll must have been opened once online, photos wait until the network is back (keep the tab open), and voice recognition usually needs a connection.

Can two inspectors share one tablet?

Yes, by signing out and in today. Each inspector has a profile with a PIN, but on-screen PIN switching on a shared tablet is planned, not live. Until then, each inspector signs in with their own login so every roll carries the right name.

Which voice phrases work?

Defect type, points and yard position in any order, with number words in Tamil, Hindi or English: "slub, moonu point, eighty-six", "hole char point 42", "stain two, sixty". Recognition uses the browser's speech service, so Tamil and Hindi work only where the tablet supports them. The confirmation bar shows what was logged; say "undo" to remove it.

Does it detect defects automatically from camera images?

No. Fabric Inspection Software has no camera or AI defect detection. Inspectors find defects on the frame and log them by tap or voice; the camera only attaches an evidence photo. Automated camera inspection is a different category of product: vision systems mounted on the inspection machine.

How do shade, GSM and shrinkage fit in?

They are separate tests on the same roll record. Enter shade group (A/B/C), GSM from your cutter and wash shrinkage in warp and weft; they print on the buyer PDF below the 4-point result and are not converted to points.

Inspect the first roll the same day

We load your defect master, buyer limits and report layout, then train your inspectors on the floor in Tirupur, Surat or Ludhiana, or over a video call. 14-day pilot, no card. Plans start at ₹4,999 a month with unlimited rolls, and every result follows the ASTM D5430 4-point rules and your buyer's own limit.
